One quarter of New York State’s population depend on mass transit to get to and from work each day. Gustavo Rivera knows that most residents of the Bronx and the 33rd Senate District use mass transit to commute each and every day.
Fighting for More Funding for the MTA
Gustavo has been fighting for dedicated funding for the MTA. Unfortunately, state officials have raided the funds that are suppose to be for the MTA, using hundreds of millions of dollars in supposedly dedicated transit funding for other budget items. The lack of adequate MTA funding has caused the worst service cuts and fare hikes in a generation, with the loss of 32 bus routes and 570 bus stops. Gustavo believes the legislature needs to fully fund the MTA capital plan in order to avoid future fare hikes that the residents of the Bronx cannot afford.
Demanding Better Mass Transit
Gustavo Rivera hosted a town hall meeting to discuss transportation issues in the 33rd Senate District. In advance of the town hall meeting, Gustavo’s office surveyed individuals who use the Bx12 Select Bus Service. More than 90% of riders were satisfied or happy with the new service. While the MTA has cut bus routes due to lack of funding, Senator Rivera is working with transportation advocates and community members to bring more select bus services to the Bronx.
