Prior to running for State Senate, Gustavo Rivera taught at Hunter College and then Pace University as a professor of Political Science. As an educator, Gustavo feels strongly that every child deserves a quality education. As a Senator, Gustavo Rivera has visited dozens of elementary, middle schools and high schools to talk to students, teachers and parents about community and education-related concerns.

Fighting for Funding for our Public Schools

Gustavo Rivera believes that New York State needs to deliver on our promise to provide a quality education to our children.  That is why he has fought to ensure that education funding be awarded to the schools that are most in need and not based on what schools are able to apply for and win grants.

Making College More Accessible

Gustavo believes that New York State must make greater investments in public education. Instead of relying on tuition increases to fill budget gaps, Gustavo Rivera believes that CUNY and SUNY schools need more funding from the state. During these difficult economic times, we cannot place the burden of higher tuition on our students. As a Senator, Gustavo has opposed tuition hikes and spoken out about the need to provide more funding for public higher education and especially for the state Tuition Assistance Program. In this year’s budget, Gustavo supported major increases in funding for CUNY and SUNY.
